Correspondence, newspaper clippings, photos, and other papers, relating to Thomas Rescum Stearns, a corporal in Company F, 29th Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, who participated in the siege of Vicksburg in 1863; his wife, Lavinia C. Van Deusen Sterns Mathews; his son Albert Henry Sterns, who spent most of his life working on various railroads and participated in the gold rush of 1898 to the Klondike and Alaska; Albert's wife, Lottie Gilmore Sterns; Edward Van Deusen, brother of Lavinia and a soldier in Company A, 37th Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, who died in the Battle of Petersburg in 1864; and Fred B. Carver, who served with Company G, 51st Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish-American War.
